Born into a figurative prison of wealth and exclusivity, and raised within the rarefied diaspora of Sephardic Jews in New York City, Altina, the daughter of a tobacco tycoon, takes us from Upper East Side society to Hollywood, Washington, D.C., and Santa Fe. As a designer, her whimsical Harlequin eyeglasses revolutionized fashion in the 1930s; as a filmmaker, she dramatized the horrors of the Third Reich and worked with MLK during the Civil Rights movement, earning an Academy Award nomination along the way. As an sculptor, relationships dominated her most original creations, the so-called chairacters that cast lovers or absences of love and exude the unencumbered sexuality of a proto-feminist who was born before women could even vote.
